The part you left out, and is not well known, Ethel is the daughter of Betty Crocker and poor Mary is only a daughter in-law. Betty trying to keep the family peace, published both recipes, knowing that most bakers knew that Ethel's cookies are far better. Mary's husband (Ethel's brother) knows that at this time of year, his sister will hook him up with cookies. Mary is good at somethings but Baking isn't one of them.
